Avon Park Republican Rep. Cary Pigman is no longer facing a primary challenger in his re-election campaign for House District 55.
Former Okeechobee City Council member Devin Maxwell filed to run for HD 55 back in November, just a few months after he was arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of a single-car accident.
The University of Georgia alumnus didn’t post a single contribution or expenditure throughout his six-month campaign, and likely entered the race in anticipation of a senate run by Pigman.
Maxwell’s exit leaves the second-term representative as the only Republican running for the seat, which covers all of Glades, Highlands and Okeechobee, as well as part of St. Lucie counties.
Through the end of May, the veteran lawmaker had brought in more $92,473 in contributions and spent $64,577, leaving him with about $28,000 in his campaign account.
The physician still has to face Democrat Tony Munnings in the general election, though he has only raised $1,000 since filing for the seat back in December 2014.
Munnings also ran for the heavily GOP seat in 2014, but failed to make the ballot leaving Pigman to get another term without opposition.
The only time Pigman faced an Election Day challenge was back in the 2012 cycle, when he easily defeated Democrat Crystal Drake with 55 percent of the vote.
