Another day, another example of institutional support for Jacksonville’s Aug. 30 referendum to extend the half-cent sales tax to defray the unfunded actuarial pension liability.

On Friday, the JAXSPORTS Council board announced its support for the referendum.

“It is our hope that JAXSPORTS’ endorsement of Mayor Curry’s pension proposal will send a message that this crisis impacts every facet of our community — sports included,” said JAXSPORTS Council Chairman Charlie Tomm. “The sooner our city can unite and support a common solution, the sooner we can correct a longstanding financial burden the city has faced, and use our funds to continue the momentum of making Jacksonville a national powerhouse for sports, entertainment, business and tourism.”

Mayor Lenny Curry has aggressively promoted the pension tax referendum, and he has gotten support from a broad cross-section of community interests.
