The Florida Medical Association has thrown its support behind Dana Young.

The organization’s political committee announced Tuesday it was endorsing Young in her Senate District 18 bid. In a letter to the Tampa Republican, Dr. Chris Pittman, the president of FMA PAC, said the organization looked forward to working with Young “to address health policy issues affecting Florida’s physicians and their patients.”

Young, the House Majority Leader, was first elected to the Florida House in 2010. She is forgoing a re-election bid to run for the state Senate.

“Our physicians play an integral role in our community and throughout the state, keeping Floridians safe and healthy,” she said in a statement. “With our physicians and, most importantly, our patients in mind, we must ensure that we are upholding the highest standards of care and advancing the quality and accessibility of health care in the State of Florida.”

Young faces Democrat Bob Buesing in the November general election.
