U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has weighed in on the contentious Senate District 17 Republican primary, offering his endorsement of Republican state Rep. Debbie Mayfield.

“I have known Debbie personally for nearly 20 years and can tell you she is a caring mother and devoted wife,” Rubio stated in a news release issued by Mayfield’s campaign. “I’m supporting Debbie not only because she is my friend but also because she is a committed conservative with the courage to stand up and fight for what she believes in. She’s honest, hardworking and the type of proven leader that Republicans can be proud of.”

Mayfield is locked in a primary battle with fellow state Rep. Ritch Workman and Mike Thomas in the strongly Republican-leaning, Melbourne-based district.

Rubio rarely makes endorsements.

“Marco and I share a conservative vision for Florida and I am honored to have his support,” Mayfield stated in the release.

As the toxic algae sludge from Okeechobee continues its journey north towards the Indian River lagoon in Brevard County, it’s good to know who Marco ““sugar subsidies are a matter of national security” Rubio is backing in this race. Fanjuls are running scared that Workman might do more in Tallahassee to protect our waterways from political corruption, and undo what Rubio and Big Sugar did to endanger them.
