Gov. Rick Scott is postponing his trip to Washington, D.C. to push for Zika funding.

The Governor’s Office announced Monday Scott is postponing his trip, choosing to “stay in Florida to continue to monitor response efforts from damage during Hurricane Hermine.”

The Naples Republican was scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., Tuesday to meet with members of Congress and ask them to immediately pass a Zika funding package. According to an email from Jackie Schutz, the governor’s communications director, the visit will be rescheduled for a future date.

There were 705 cases of Zika in Florida as of Sept. 1. According to the Department of Health, 49 of those cases were locally transmitted cases of Zika. The DOH reported 80 cases involved pregnant women.

Scott spent the weekend in Tallahassee monitoring recovery efforts. As of Sunday evening, the Associated Press reported there were more than 58,000 utility customers without electricity. The majority of those customers were in Leon County, where the storm knocked down trees and power lines.
