New poll shows Donald Trump leading Hillary Clinton

With nine weeks until Election Day, the race to the White House remains close.

A new CNN/ORC poll shows Donald Trump leads Hillary Clinton among likely voters, 45 percent to 43 percent. Libertarian Gary Johnson is at 7 percent, while Green Party candidate Jill Stein is at 2 percent.

Both Clinton and Trump remain deeply disliked. The survey found 54 percent of likely voters had an unfavorable opinion of Trump. Fifty-six percent of likely voters said they had an unfavorable opinion of Clinton.

Both candidates have led in the polls over the past few months. According to CNN, Clinton was most recently at the top of the heap with an eight-point lead among registered voters in an August CNN/ORC poll.

The CNN poll found independent voters give Trump a bump, with 49 percent saying they’d vote for him. The survey found 29 percent said they would back Clinton.

The poll surveyed 1,001 adults — including 886 registered voters and 786 likely voters — by telephone from Sept. 1 to Sept. 4. The margin of error is 3.5 percent.

Meanwhile, a new Washington Post-SurveyMonkey online 50-state poll found Clinton remains strong in battleground states and Republican strongholds. That strength, the Washington Post reported, gives her an advantage in the Electoral College.

That survey found Trump has an edge in Ohio and Iowa, and the race is close in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. However, the survey noted he is struggling in places like Arizona, Georgia, and Texas.

Clinton leads, but by less than four points, in Colorado and Florida. The Washington Post reported she leads by at least four points in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

The Washington Post-SurveyMonkey poll is based on responses from more than 74,000 registered voters from Aug. 9 to Sept. 1.
