Most years, the House District 13 race in Jacksonville would be considered a slam dunk for a Democrat … especially if that Democrat were the incumbent.
This year? The incumbent Democrat, Reggie Fullwood, is staring down an October trial for 14 federal counts related to using campaign funds for personal expenses.
And in that context, HD 13 is a battle.
And at least when it comes to the money side, right now the challenger, Pastor Mark Griffin, is winning.
Between Sept. 3 and 16, $2,250 of new money flowed into the Griffin campaign, bringing him up to $35,421 raised (including a $10,000 personal loan) against a mere $5,275 spent, giving Griffin over $30,000 on hand.
During that same two-week period, Griffin spent $1,631.
Curiously, his campaign expenditure record says his expenses are paid to Citicard and American Express, for items such as buttons and yard signs.
Fullwood had gone since Aug. 25 without reporting any financial activity until the current report, and that may be just as well, as he had nothing to report between Sept. 3 and 16.
Fullwood still has yet to bother accounting for the period between Aug. 26 and Sept. 2 at all.
Fullwood has just over $17,400 on hand.
