Hurricane Matthew-related insurance claims surpass 39,000

Insurance claims related to Hurricane Matthew are arriving in earnest now — more than 39,000 of them as of Wednesday.

The exact number, according to the Florida Department of Insurance Regulation, was 39,302. Estimated losses stood at $218 million.

Of the total claims, 650 had been closed with payments to the policyholders; another 1,027 were closed without payments.

“It’s still early in the process, but we are monitoring the information being reported for any potential concerns,” department spokeswoman Amy Bogner said via email.

Residential property accounted for 34,913 claims; commercial, 652.

Volusia County was hardest hit, reporting 11,955 claims. Duval County reported 6,536, and Brevard 5,499. St. Johns reported 3,654.

Also hard hit were Flagler County, with 2,273 claims and Orange with 1,668.

The department maintains a webpage featuring the latest claims tally, including county-by-county breakdowns.
