Florida added 18,800 private-sector jobs in September, according to new employment data released by payroll company ADP.

The ADP Regional Employment Report shows Florida adding more jobs than any other state tracked in the report except Texas, which added 24,900 jobs last month.

California has taken the top spot in the report nearly every month since ADP started tracking state-level data, but came in third place behind Florida with 17,400 jobs added last month.

The majority of Florida’s new jobs were added in the service industry, though the state also saw a 1,000-job gain in manufacturing and another 1,000 jobs added in mining and construction.

The industry breakdown shows 6,200 of the new service industry jobs were added in the professional and business services sector, while 2,600 were added in trade, transportation and utilities businesses.

Last month’s numbers are an improvement over August, when Florida added 15,200 jobs, and also beat out September 2015, when the state saw a gain of 15,700 private-sector jobs.

Regionally, Southern states held on to the top spot with 74,000 new jobs across the 17 states making up the region. Western came in second with 41,000 jobs, followed by the Midwest with 25,000 and the Northeast with 14,000 jobs.

The ADP Regional Employment Report uses government jobs data alongside ADP’s in-house payroll data to estimate month-to-month changes in employment. The next report, covering October, will be released Nov. 9.
