Gus Bilirakis is celebrating his first legislative success of 2018 after the U.S. House unanimously approved the Tarpon Springs Republican’s proposal to improve the airline passenger screening process.
Passed Tuesday, the Security Assessment Feasibility for Equipment Testing and Evaluation of Capabilities for our Homeland (SAFE TECH) Act would provide an avenue for third-party testing of innovative technology screening capabilities to enhance airport security.
SAFE TECH would also assess the feasibility of linking compatible security technology utilized by the U. S.and international allies in order to augment screening checkpoints. This coordinated collaboration is an essential element of strengthening global security.
Bilirakis said the genesis of the bill came after a recent congressional delegation trip, where he had the opportunity to review screening procedures at major European Union hubs like Amsterdam and Frankfurt for inbound travel to the United States.
“I have always contended that if we are not safe, then nothing else matters,” he said. “During my recent fact-finding mission, I was startled by the lack of consistency in international standards and gaps in technology that support precautionary measures to ensure passenger safety. I am convinced this is something that needs to be immediately rectified, and I am pleased this important bill is moving expeditiously through the legislative process.”
On his Facebook page, Bilirakis elaborated on the bill’s passage: “Currently, technical standards for safety and operating procedures at international airports are set by international agreements. The standards are broad and leave vulnerabilities through inconsistencies with international partners. My bill addresses this concern and will make air travel safer for everyone entering the United States.”
The bill now moves on to the Senate.
