Though the House District 18 seat is filled through 2020, the Clay County establishment clearly is behind a candidate for the impending 2020 election.
That candidate: Sam Garrison, Orange Park’s general counsel and board chair for St. Johns River College.
Garrison is the law partner of Sen. Rob Bradley in Clay County and a previous assistant State Attorney in the 4th circuit.
Garrison emerges at a time when the current office holder has unique power: Rep. Travis Cummings is the budget chief in the House, just as his law partner is in the Senate.
Both Bradley and Cummings will helm the host committee for a Tuesday evening kickoff fundraiser. Joining them: Rep. Bobby Payne of House District 19, a district that contains the parts of Clay Cummings doesn’t represent currently.
Also on the host committee: former Education Commissioner Jim Horne, former Clay Sheriff Scott Lancaster, and Joe Mobley of the Fiorentino Group.
What’s increasingly clear is that Garrison is winning the invisible primary.
The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at Talons at Eagle Harbor Golf Club.
HD 18 is a safe Republican seat.
