Flags are at half staff Thursday in honor of Broward Sheriff’s deputy Benjamin Nimtz, killed in an on-duty traffic wreck.
Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a memo late Wednesday to Tom Berger, the state’s Director of Real Estate Management and Development, as well as Broward County Commissioner Tim Ryan, Deerfield Beach Mayor Bill Ganz, and Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony.
“In honor of Deputy Nimtz, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half staff at the Broward County Courthouse in Ft. Lauderdale, City Hall in Deerfield Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Ft. Lauderdale, and the Capitol in Tallahassee, from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, Aug. 1,” he wrote.
The 30-year-old Nimtz, who had been with BSO since last March, was killed Sunday, July 21, while responding to a call in Deerfield Beach.
He was “killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of South Military Trail and S.W. 10th Street while responding to a domestic violence call at 3 a.m.,” according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
“His patrol car collided with a pickup truck in the intersection. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
“… He was one week from resigning from the department to move to Indiana,” the site added. “Nimtz is survived by his wife and two children.”
