City of Lakeland’s attorney arrested in undercover sex sting

Tim McCausland has worked for the city of Lakeland for nearly three decades.

A longtime city attorney in Florida has been arrested in an undercover prostitution sting.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tim McCausland in a hotel in Brandon on a misdemeanor charge of violating a county ordinance against public solicitation. McCausland has worked for the city of Lakeland for nearly three decades.

Authorities told news outlets Thursday the 69-year-old McCausland responded to fake advertisements posted online by undercover deputies. Seven other people were also arrested in the operation, which is part of a larger effort to tackle human trafficking in the area.

City officials say the Wednesday arrest happened on a scheduled workday and that they are investigating.

McCausland is up for a work performance review later this month.

No attorney was listed in court records for McCausland.

When this matter is referred to the Florida Bar’s “Character and Fitness Committee” (or whatever it’s called), they should keep in mind that prostitution — however disgusting and immoral — should not be illegal and should not be the basis for censure, reprimand, suspension or disbarment. The City of Lakeland did not hire this attorney on the basis of his sex life; they hired him because he is competent at the Law. Apparently they have been happy with him, because he has been their attorney for almost three decades.

FYI, the platform of the Libertarian Party of Florida says as follows:

” … V. VICE LAWS. 1. We oppose all laws and regulations that attempt to protect individuals from the consequences of their own behavior. While not necessarily condoning such activities, we advocate the repeal of all laws criminalizing gambling, possession and sale of drugs, and sexual relations between consenting adults. All those presently incarcerated or ever convicted solely for the commission of these victimless crimes must be pardoned and their records expunged … “

Who cares what political party you are affiliated with. If you break the law you break the law. Let’s not forget how hypocritical it is to enforce laws or litigate legal matters all while breaking the law.
