Seven of the eight South Florida casino operators (Calder, Dania, Isle of Capri, Magic City, Mardi Gras, Miami Jai Alai, and Hialeah) had a meeting today with Gov. Rick Scott or his staff, a source close to the conversations tells Florida Politics.
The casino operators discussed their desire for business parity and related issues, including the Seminole compact, the overall competitive situation in South Florida, and their ability to compete on a level playing field. Apparently it was a constructive meeting that focused on free-market principles aligned with the governor’s economic views.
The meeting with the casino operators was not listed on Scott’s public schedule.
It’s not clear why the eighth South Florida racino operator wasn’t present, but once we figure it out, we’ll let you know.
As Mary Ellen Klas notes, “Absent from the meeting was Gulfstream race track and casino and the Palm Beach County Kennel Club, the other two South Florida pari-mutuels. PBKC’s top priority is to bring slot machines to the track and end the requirement that they race dogs in order to operate poker games.”
