Doug Broxson will keep his seat in the Florida Senate and Jay Trumbull will head from the House to the upper chamber after the pair sailed to victory in their respective races.
Broxson, a Pensacola Republican, defeated Democrat Charlie Nichols 71-29%, according to state elections data to retain his District 1 seat. He raised $382,000 and spent $92,000 on his campaign, while Nichols spent just $3,200, with more than half of it on the $1,782 qualifying fee.
Senate District 1 covers Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, as well as inland Okaloosa County and heavily favors Republicans. It changed only slightly during the redistricting process, as the old district took in the southern portion of Okaloosa County covering Eglin Air Force Base, whereas now it covers only the part of the county north of the base.
Broxson has served in the Senate since 2016 and served in the House for six years before that.
In the Senate District 2 race, Trumbull got 79% of the vote to Democrat Carolynn Zonia’s 21%, according to state elections data.
Trumbull, a Panama City Republican, raised $576,500 and spent $443,500 on his campaign, dwarfing the $20,500 spent on Zonia’s. Trumbull was most recently Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and served eight years in the House before jumping in the District 2 race when Sen. George Gainer opted not to run for re-election.
District 2 covers Bay, Calhoun, Jackson, Washington, Holmes and Walton counties as well as the southern portion of Okaloosa County.
