Citing ‘hostile actions,’ education group is the latest to pull its convention from Florida

'While no place can be 100% safe, Florida this fall did not feel like the best place to gather for our annual conference.'

Noting the “escalating waves of hostile actions and legislation coming out of Florida,” the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) is ditching its scheduled annual conference at the Hyatt Regency Miami later this year and will instead hold it in Chicago.

In a letter sent to ACSP educators, researchers and students posted on the organization’s website, Laxmi Ramasubramanian, the ACSP president, said the group had made “this difficult decision” to move their convention to align with the ACSP’s values statement.

The organization is a consortium of more than 100 university departments and programs offering planning degrees.

“Despite myriad assurances from the Florida hospitality industry, members of all ACSP interest groups expressed significant concerns regarding travel to Florida,” Ramasubramanian wrote.

“While no place can be 100% safe, Florida this fall did not feel like the best place to gather for our annual conference. As with the state of Florida, other states curtail what can and cannot be taught in high school and college classrooms. Planning educators have a lot of issues we should be concerned about, including how we prepare future planners to work in environments hostile to the ideals and principles of planning.”

Organizations representing Black, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities in Florida have issued travel advisories in recent months, citing “open hostility” to those groups manifested in laws passed during the recent Legislative Session, as noted by Ramasubramanian in a message sent out to members last month.

In another letter dated May 26, Ramasubramanian wrote that, “Like you, I have been following the escalating waves of hostile actions and legislation coming out of Florida but also other states that are following a political playbook. It is disheartening, painful and it makes me angry. As president of ACSP, I write today to acknowledge the anxieties, hurt, and anger that you may be feeling and experiencing.”

‘Anti-humanitarian legislation’

The Orlando Sentinel reported last week a number of conferences slated to be held later this year or in future years in Orange County have been moved or canceled due to the political environment in Florida, including a convention for Game of Thrones fans, with “Con of Thrones” organizers citing the “increasingly anti-humanitarian legislation in the state.”

No such cancellations have happened yet in the Tampa Bay area, according to officials.

“The Tampa Convention Center is fortunate to have not experienced any contracted client cancellations due to political climate,” says Kirstin Albert, communications coordinator for the facility. “Tampa is a welcoming and diverse city, and we are proud to be a part of that atmosphere.”

A spokesperson for Visit Tampa Bay, the tourism marketing organization for Tampa and Hillsborough County, told the Phoenix it has not experienced any conventions pulling out of the area, either.

A spokesperson for ACSP anticipated about 1,200 conference attendees who will now make the trip to the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago in October.

I hear the International Association of Shoe Repairers is cancelling it’s convention too. In their press release they accused DeSantis of “having no sole”. Get in the story Phoenix. Your readers are screaming for the truth.

Rhonda has no sole, but their campaign sure is flounder-ing.

Has no soul? Casey was recently overheard saying to rhonda when he was dancing naked in his white rubber boots, “not only do you have soul, you ARE soul”.

That’s what Casey said for her hubby to hear, but then she muttered under her breath, about naked Rhonda dancing in his white rubber boots, “Now I see why those are called shrimp boots”

So they’re into shrimping then … explains the whole chocolate pudding thing I guess. Wild times in Tallahassee by the sound of it – the new San Francisco of the south where broke goes to die.

Was MoM Suarez’s campaign AI chatbot not immediately available for comment about this Miami convention cancellation?

Had it been available, I bet it would have said “all the big talk from Little Rhonda is just talk. It is perfectly fine coming to Florida.”

Nobody ever said AI chatbots were smart. AI chatbots learn from Twitter and Twitter is just broke, right wing propaganda now due to Musk. AI chatbots are effectively just trolls, designed to divert deflect and deny.

I wish the conventions would simply move to blue cities within Florida, college towns, to set a good example.

I was thinking similar, that conventions should relocate to Disney. However, blue cities in Florida, Disney World in Orlando, even with Disney having its own government, it’s still Florida.

Conventioneers can’t relocate in-state to make a point about the state. If they would relocate to Disneyland in California, that would make their point and doubly so.

…so the Dook 4 Brains leftys take their business to the murder capitol of, not just the entire United States of America, but aruguably The entire World – yes ladies and gentelmen they are actually forcing their vulnarable membership to go to $hitcago. I hope they hire armed guards to escort them from airport to hotel, lock them down inside the hotel for the duration of the convention, then escort them back thru the demilatrized zone surrounding $hitcago’s airport at the conclusion of the convention. Of course the air outside the hotel wont be fit to breath due to the constant thick and billowing clouds of gunpowder.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha … “ten minutes later we return” … Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.
    Well now where was I?
Ahh yes … the citizens of The Great State of Florida wish them the best.
*Below are some common sense advice from Florida to get excused from putting your life at risk at conventions in non-Florida cities:*

CONVENTIONS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF FLORIDA QUICK AND EASY EXCUSES:
“Be safe y’all and under no circumstances leave your hotel. And stay away from the windows in your room, dont accept a lower floor hotel room, stay out of the lobby or any public access locations, and walk in groups from your room to the convention space and from the convention space to the restrooms. Your very life depends on following Florida’s advice”. “In addition, just to be safe, Florida suggests all convention members, who actually must attend a non-Florida location, to take out a life insurance rider for the duration of the convention in $hitcago or any non-Florida location.
Of course if you can avoid the $hitcago or other non-Florida convention that would be your best course of action.
***Some of the most successfull excuses involve various illness which involve the severe incontinance of your bowels.***
Your supervisor will be so grossed out when you tell a few “poop on your BMW car seat stories, poop on the movie theater seat, poop on the pew down at your church ancidotal stories that you likely wont even get to the church pew befor your supervisor cuts you off and says ” OK damment we will just send Johnson in your place”. So theres that.
We have gone ahead and re-booked y’all’s convention for next year at The Hyatt Regency Miami with a 20% discount on everything because we know your little $hitcago protest will be y’all’s ACSP members worst convention ever, even for your members lucky enough to make it home alive.
    Thank you ACSP,
The Great State of Florida, Convention Capital of The World

      Dad,

You know perfectly well that Chicago is very safe north of The Bean unless you happen upon a mass shooter exercising their 2nd Amendment rights but that risk is everywhere in USA.

Florida, however, is Florida everywhere from the Floribama lounge to Key West except maybe for Key West. Dry Tortugas is probably okay too.

A typical uneducated unintelligent ignorant response…I’m sure you have been there and know everything about Chi-Town maybe you should focus more on Florida’s crime as well as it’s racist bigot governor and supporters…So you can boycott bud light and target because you don’t like what they did or God forbid stood up for but other’s are not allowed to do the same…There are people in Florida that 100% agreed with De’Hilter about immigrants and yet they are now crying about their lawn care and house keeper’s & new condo’ on hold because immigrants are doing exactly what was pushed for they are leaving…ENTITLEMENT & TOTAL HYPOCRISY ON DISPLAY PRICELESS 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I found the nest of angry psychotic liberals and wow are they childish and angry. Psychotic even. So violent and angry. Not at all the kind of things you’d read on a normal site.

Someone needs to get these people a job. Only, I imagine most of the pathetic weirdos that leave a reply on every single comment are either teachers or professional activists.

I’ve never voted for a republican in my life but I’m so thankful I’ve never fallen for this high school level name calling contest the left wingers find themselves in.

You might as well call Ron a Big Meany Stinky Doo Doo head. You’re all so pathetic it’s hard to believe.

People get shot a lot on Chicago’s south side but the north side of town is quite safe.
People get shot a lot all over the entire state of Florida.
      No alligators in Chicago.
      Alligators everywhere in Florida.
Florida is on fire. It’s summer.
Chicago is not on fire since that one incident with that cow that time.
Chicago seems like the safer choice.
