President Joe Biden, in a brief statement Sunday afternoon, said he directed an independent review of the security at the rally Saturday where a shooter allegedly attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at an open-air rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Biden also directed the U.S. Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which begins Monday.
Biden urged Americans not to make assumptions about the motive of the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who the U.S. Secret Service killed at the scene. Biden says they’re working swiftly to investigate the incident.
“Unity is the most elusive goal of all,” he added, urging the public to strive for it.
Biden plans to address the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday at 8 p.m. to discuss the assassination attempt further.
One rally attendee was killed by gunfire Saturday, while two bystanders were severely injured. Biden said he and First Lady Jill Biden were praying for the family of the person who died at the rally and that he was sincerely grateful that Trump is “doing well and recovering.”
Biden said, “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter.”
