Experts will schedule workshops each month to help residents deal with legal complexities.

St. Johns County residents seeking more information on family law issues will now have an outlet to pick up that information thanks to a series of monthly workshops.

Those workshops are a joint effort between the St. Johns County Clerk of Circuit Courts, Comptroller’s Office, St. Johns County Legal Aid and the law office of Nancy Harrison.

“We understand navigating the judicial system may be challenging,” said John Rundgren, Clerk Designee. “This partnership will ensure unrepresented parties in family law matters have an opportunity to receive guidance before filing pleadings with our office.”

The first workshop is set for Aug. 7 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Richard O. Watson Judicial Center, 4010 Lewis Speedway in St. Augustine. The workshops are entirely free and open to the public. The events will cover such topics as divorce, child custody, asset separation, and pro se filing of pleadings. The goal of the workshops is to ensure everyone has access to the information needed to protect their rights and gain knowledge from legal counsel as they navigate the filing process.

Harrison, who is a lawyer specializing in family law, will oversee much of the discussion. She said many residents simply have no idea about the complexity of family law issues and are faced with daunting challenges when they have to confront those issues.

“Family law is an area of law that can be difficult to navigate without the help of an attorney,” Harrison said. “My goal is to provide useful information and convey knowledge about family law so that the process of filing documents with the court and moving through the legal process to a final resolution is less stressful.”

Additional workshops will be scheduled on a monthly basis and St. Johns residents seeking additional information can go to the St. Johns County Clerk of Courts website on the issue.

First line of defense.. don’t get married. It’s that simple. Not worth the potential legal reprocussions later if it goes tits up.
