Tampa City Councilman Mike Suarez is feeling confident in his bid for re-election to his District 1 seat next month.
Unlike four years ago, where he was competing against four other candidates in his first bid for elected office, Suarez is in solid shape with less than three weeks to go in his primary contest, where he faces only one opponent, Seminole Heights activist Susan Long.
Suarez is running in part based on his role as a leader in transportation. The current chair with HART, Suarez told citizens at a candidates forum Tuesday night that the discussion about transportation is “the most important thing we’re going to deal with in the next 20 years.”
“Without an effective transit system that’s robust and all over the city, we will not have be able to compete with some of the other cities across the country and across the world,” he said. He said that there’s not enough money right now to make the system more effective, and said that would be up to residents to have to decide next year, if in fact a transit referendum goes on the ballot.
