In a safe GOP district, House District 15 incumbent state Rep. Jay Fant is likely to remain unopposed. Perhaps as a result, his fundraising has been relatively modest thus far. Fant, with $1,000 raised in July, has finally exceeded $20,000 raised. The $1,000 came in two $500 donations from subsidiaries of Southern Gardens Nursery.

The Tuesday afternoon meeting of the Jacksonville City Council’s Rules Committee didn’t exactly promise fireworks, but with the Hemming Park emergency authorization on the table, it was worth checking out. After a series of unanimous appointments, the Little Van Wert Avenue river access bill withdrawal, and a deferment of the Charlotte’s Web moratorium, the first bill […]

The Tuesday morning meeting of the Jacksonville City Council Recreation, Community Development, Public Health and Safety Committee happened as scheduled. A few highlights. The first order of business was a discussion of 2015-143, a bill marked “DEFER” in the agenda. Councilman Reggie Brown wanted to know why the city’s approach to accepting grants was “stagnant.” […]

For more than a year, the only filed candidate for public defender in Florida’s 4th Judicial Circuit was Mike Weinstein. The former Jacksonville mayoral candidate filed in March 2014, and his filing was active as late as last month. However, his filing has been withdrawn. Weinstein, the chief financial officer in Jacksonville for the Lenny Curry administration, […]

In some ways, northwest Jacksonville Councilman Reggie Brown is the most interesting member of the Jacksonville City Council right now. For one thing, talk that he might run for a State House seat (the gossip says HD 14, where the only competition at the moment is Leslie Scott Jean-Bart) persist. Brown, for his part, isn’t saying that […]

Almost up until the May election, it looked like Democrat Ken Jefferson had a real shot at being elected Jacksonville sheriff. The runoff between Jefferson and Republican Mike Williams was pitched with accusations and counterattacks. After his defeat, Jefferson gave a speech about when a candidate has to resort to “nasty ugly rhetoric to get into office, […]
