On Monday, Gov. Rick Scott appointed Myriam Irizarry as the newest judge of the Pinellas County Court.

Irizarry, 60, of Palm Harbor, has served as Chief Deputy and General Counsel to the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Pinellas County since 2003.

From 1989-2003, she had been Assistant Director of the Clerk of Court Services Division in Pinellas County. She has also taught as an Adjunct Instructor at Saint Petersburg College in the Paralegal Studies Department.

As a bilingual attorney, Irizarry provided legal counsel to the Pinellas County Spanish-speaking community. She is also a longtime volunteer at the Hispanic Outreach Center, giving education and guidance on tenant rights, landlord obligations and family matters.

In 2012, Irizarry was recognized by Florida Bar for Pro Bono Service, for her assistance at free legal workshops, as well as serving as Past President of the Center’s Inter-Cultural Advocacy Institute. She is also a past-President of the Clearwater Bar Association and served as Director of the Board for many years.

Irizarry is also on the Pro Bono Committee of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, covering Pasco and Pinellas counties.

Irizarry received her bachelor’s and law degrees from Rutgers University. She fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Walt Fullerton.

“With 36 years of experience, Myriam has proven her dedication to upholding the law, and I am confident she will honorably serve Florida families in her new position,” Scott said in a statement.
