New Jacksonville council president to be selected Wednesday

Greg Anderson

On Wednesday morning in Jacksonville City Council chambers, a new era in terms of council leadership is slated to begin.

A meeting will be called of the members of the 2015-2019 council-elect pick a 2015-2016 president-designate.

The talk is that Greg Anderson will be elected that leadership role.

What does this mean for the council?

Anderson, an at-large councilman, is a pragmatic Republican from a business background and committed to moderate positions such as expanding protections for LGBT community members while keeping the concerns of small businesses and religious organizations in mind. He’s also committed to downtown development.

Don’t expect a lot of posturing on social issues from Anderson. What you can expect is pragmatism and a commitment to the larger civic good.

We will be on hand in council chambers covering the election of new council officers on Wednesday morning.
