On Thursday, Scott Shalley began as the new Executive Director of the Florida Association of Counties, replacing former Director Christopher Holley, who is retiring.

Shalley has been with the association since 2012, most recently as enterprise director; he was chosen for the leadership position in the fall by the FAC board of directors.

“For more than 85 years FAC has fought for Florida’s 67 counties and the principal of home rule,” Shalley said in a prepared statement. “It is an honor to have been selected to serve as the Executive Director of this historic & premier organization.”

The role of the FAC — the only association representing Florida’s counties — is to provide advocacy, education and collaboration that promotes county home rule.

In his new position, Shalley will lead an organization of all 67 member counties, 377 county commissioners, a staff of 29 and a grassroots team made up of thousands of supporters.

“Scott brings to this organization the skills needed to take the Association to the next level,” said FAC President Barbara Sharief, as Broward County commissioner. “Under Scott’s expertise, FAC will highlight the service counties provide and strengthen home rule throughout Florida.”

FAC applies the combined knowledge of county commissioners, as well as experience of thousands of professional county staff, to speak with a unified voice on behalf of all Floridians.

“Over my coming tenure, the Association will focus on protecting home rule at the Capitol, establishing our expertise on county matters, spotlighting the service of our counties and sharing these accomplishments throughout Florida,” Shalley said.

Prior to his time at the FAC, Shalley for 6 years was executive director of the Florida Architects Association before joining the Figg Engineering Group as vice president/director of Business Management. He was at Figg for seven years, until moving to the association in 2012.
