Angela Corey widens fundraising lead in reelection race

Angela Corey

Circuit 4 State Attorney Angela Corey widened her fundraising lead over her challenger, Wes White, in August.

Corey’s $16,488 in August brought her total to $185,678. White’s $3,500 brought his tally up to $17,750.

Notable August contributions for Corey include $1,000 donations from J.B. Coxwell ContractingJohn David CoxwellHelen Coxwell, and former mayor John Peyton’s Gate Petroleum.

Meanwhile, White had an interesting $1,000 donation of his own, from former maverick judge John Merrett.

Merrett, who lost his reelection bid in 2012, is familiar to Florida Politics readers for his excoriation of a short-lived ban on videotaping and photography outside of the Duval County Courthouse.

During his tenure, Merrett made news for pulling a gun in his courtroom.

Merrett was a colorful figure on the bench, whose unpredictable nature was legendary. He also was considered to be more sympathetic to defendants than most.

Will the Merrett donation show other mavericks the way to Wes White? Stay tuned.
