Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate introduces herself to Jacksonville

On Thursday afternoon, Florida’s Insurance Consumer Advocate Sha’ron James held an insurance consumer forum at Jacksonville’s City Hall.

State Representative Mia Jones, in introducing “fellow Rattler” James, noted that insurance “is an area that is not easy” and that “most people don’t understand.”

James then launched into a presentation, pointing out two key issues her office has dealt with.

The first: “unexpected medical expenses” or “balance billing,” which gets interesting and expensive when consumers unwittingly use out of network providers. Balance bills, related James, can run into the high five figures.

“We’re working,” James said, “to develop a solution for problems like that.”

Part of that solution involves forums like this to get a sense of specific issues people are having.

Another issue: water loss claims, which lead to rate increases in homeowner’s insurance.

James tells FloridaPolitics.com that future consumer forums will take place in Tallahassee and Orlando before the Session starts. Jacksonville is the fourth city these forums have happened in.
