In the circles of those who care the most, there’s a lot of talk about Jacksonville’s HD 12 race to replace termed-out Lake Ray.
Richard Clark, with just over $50,000 in fundraising (with no October numbers filed yet), assured FloridaPolitics.com that he’s still in the race, despite getting a six-figure job with JTA recently.
Others are restive, wanting another candidate to jump in: names floated include another former Republican Jacksonville City Councilman, Clay Yarborough, and former sheriff John Rutherford.
The feeling among certain observers is that the answer is A-B-C: anybody but Clark.
Well, almost anybody; it doesn’t look like Clark’s only declared opponent, Don Redman, is attaining real traction.
With a second straight month without fundraising, the only sign of life in October: $131 worth of expenditures for office supplies, phone services, and stickers.
Even his $500 monthly stipend to consultant Brian Fallon, paid the previous two months, went unpaid in October.
Some say it’s early in these races; however, for candidates like Don Redman, it’s getting late.
If this is the end of Don Redman’s political career, his legacy is one worth examining.
Known for social conservative posturing on Council, Redman’s legacy doesn’t seem to have appreciably been embraced by his replacement, Scott Wilson, his Council aide for eight years.
Perhaps Redman’s money troubles indicate that, in the words of Elvis Costello, he’s a “man out of time.”
Update: Hours after this article ran, Redman posted the following to his Facebook page: “My campaign for State Legislative District 12 is moving into another phase, thank you for all your support. Visit the campaign website at www.votefordonredman.com, campaign contributions accepted.”
