The Jax Chamber may not be aligned with Lenny Curry on the HRO. But on the “pension tax” bill currently in Tallahassee, the Chamber and Curry are in sync.
Feb. 24 will see the Chamber take a bus trip out to Tallahassee to support Curry’s pension tax proposal, which involves an extension of the Better Jacksonville Plan half-cent sales tax through 2060 to deal with the $2.6 billion unfunded liability.
“Mayor Curry’s proposal to pay down the city’s unfunded pension debt is making its way through Tallahassee — passing another House committee yesterday,” wrote Chairwoman Audrey Moran. “The Board of Directors voted unanimously last month to support the proposal and take an active role in making sure the measure is approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Scott – the first steps in getting it on the ballot this fall.
“Daniel [Davis] and his team have crafted an advocacy plan and will be taking a busload of Chamber members to Tallahassee on Feb. 24 to talk with legislators and show support for the plan,” which is essential, as solving “the unfunded pension problem is key to us being able to make our Big Dreams a reality. Our legislators need to see our business leaders in Tallahassee and know we are behind this plan.”
