Former Orlando City Commissioner Phil Diamond has won the endorsement of Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie in his bid to succeed her when she retires next year.

Haynie, who has served as comptroller for 26 years, is widely respected and trusted by political leaders of both parties in Orange County, and announced her retirement plans last year. Today announced she is endorsing Diamond.

It’s an easy pick at the moment because Diamond, a Democrat, is the only announced candidate for the seat, though several prominent Orlando politicians have been mentioned as potential and interested in the post.

Haynie expressed clear familiarity with Diamond, who served as a city commissioner for ten years before he ran against Mayor Buddy Dyer and lost in 2012.

“I’ve known Phil for many years,” Haynie said. “As an Orlando City Commissioner, he was a vigilant watchdog over how public funds were appropriated and spent. His experience and training as a CPA and a tax attorney, along with his local government experience, provide him with the ideal set of skills,” Haynie stated in a news release issued by Diamond’s campaign.

“Most importantly, Phil has the integrity, judgment and courage, to speak out for Orange County’s citizens. I am proud to support and endorse Phil Diamond to be our next County Comptroller.”

Diamond returned the compliment, calling Haynie,  “the very essence of public service and sound stewardship.

“She has kept a steady hand and careful eye on our county’s finances for many years,” he stated. “No endorsement could mean more to me than hers.”
