Carlos Beruff on banning people from entering United States: ‘I stand by my answer’

Carlos Beruff isn’t backing off comments suggesting people from the Middle East be banned from entering the United States.

According to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Beruff told a crowd of Broward County Republicans that he didn’t think it was “safe to allow anybody from the Middle East into this country.” The comment was in response to a question about his position on Muslim immigration.

When asked by a reporter about how broad of a ban he would propose, Beruff said he apply the prohibition to “pretty much anybody that’s got a terrorist organization in it, which is pretty much all of the Middle East.” The ban would apply to Christians and Muslims. The ban would not apply to Israel.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Beruff bashed the media and said Democrats “refuse to deal with reality.”

“The liberal media is out of control. And Democrats refuse to deal with reality. They make things up, sensationalize common sense solutions and exacerbate this obsession over political correctness. I stand by my answer and will repeat: anyone with ties, or possible ties, to terrorism should not be allowed in the United States,” he said in a statement.

“The Obama Administration has allowed our immigration system to become a serious national security risk. Until we can ensure that our vetting process is full-proof (sic) and nothing will be missed in the process of approving people for admittance to the United States, it is the federal government’s responsibility to do whatever is necessary to keep us safe here at home.”

Beruff is one of five Republicans running for U.S. Senate. The primary is Aug. 30.
