Email Insights: John Morgan calls out Mel Sembler in fundraising email

John Morgan has a message for supporters of a medical marijuana ballot initiative: They won’t be bullied.

In an email Tuesday, Morgan encouraged supporters to donate to the United for Care campaign and stand up against opponents, including St. Petersburg Republican financier Mel Sembler.

Sembler told the Tampa Bay Times he was hoping to raise $10 million for the Drug-Free Florida Committee. The committee raised more than $7 million to defeat the 2014 medical marijuana amendment.

“I made a commitment to see compassion come to Florida in the form of medical marijuana, and I’ve put over $7 million of my own money towards fulfilling that commitment,” said Morgan in the fundraising email. “Last Friday, Mel the Moocher announced he was going to raise $10 million to defeat medical marijuana in Florida. He raised $7.5 million last time. Guess how much Mel the Moocher put in of his own money in 2014? Only 1.3% of the $7.5 million he raised. $100,000.”

Morgan continued by calling Sembler a bully, and told supporters he wasn’t “going to let this man bully the sick and suffering people of Florida in 2016.”

“WE. WILL. NOT. BE BULLIED,” wrote Morgan.

The fundraising email came hours after Morgan took to Twitter, trolling Sembler and medical marijuana opponents. On Twitter, Morgan called on Sembler to write a check for $10 million for his opposition campaign.

A recent poll shows the 2016 medical marijuana initiative has broad support. In 2014, the amendment received 58 percent support, just shy of the 60 percent needed to become law.
