In an interview Wednesday with Craig Patrick, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera found some common ground with Donald Trump, whom he said he did not think he could support for President earlier this year.
Lopez-Cantera said that the wall on the Mexican border, a signature Trump proposal, could be part of a comprehensive solution to the problems created by illegal immigration.
The goal: “to not let anybody, not one person, who seeks to do us harm into this country.”
When asked about the wall, Lopez-Cantera said it would be “part of the equation,” combined with technology, the use of the eVerify system, and other safeguards designed to keep illegal immigrants from getting a foothold.
A senior staffer with the Lopez-Cantera campaign said the candidate’s support for the wall, in concert with other safeguards, was consistent with his previous position.
However, if Lopez-Cantera has been voicing support for the Mexican border wall, evidence of it is scant on Google.
Lopez-Cantera’s opponents and critics will likely note his shift to a Trump-styled position on the wall as evidence of ideological opportunism. Meanwhile, his supporters likely will continue to say that even though his position seems to have evolved, it really hasn’t.
