Rick Scott: ‘My goal is to help the federal government get prepared’ for Zika

Zika Mosquitoes

Gov. Rick Scott reiterated on Friday the need for state and federal officials to work together to prepare for the spread of the Zika virus.

“We’re coming on summer. We’re going to see heat. We’re going to see rain. We’re going to see mosquitoes. And we’re going to see people coming back from Brazil,” said Scott after a stop in Bonita Springs. “My goal is to help the federal government get prepared, to help us get prepared.”

Scott is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., next week to meet with congressional leaders about the Zika virus. The trip is scheduled for May 11 and 12, and Scott said he plans to talk about how they can “work together to come up with a plan to fund the right programs.”

“They have to come together and start working together,” he said. “It’s real frustrating, the federal government wasted a lot of our money, they’ve run up our debt, but in this case they have to come together and come up with a plan that will work with all of our states, including Florida.”

As of Thursday afternoon, there had been 102 cases of Zika virus in Florida. All of the cases were travel related, according to the Department of Health. Two of the confirmed cases were still exhibiting symptoms.
