Jacksonville City Council member Kim Daniels is responding to critics who say she could have attended Monday night’s At-Large Region 1 debate at the Main Library downtown if she really wanted to.

Daniels said she had a previous commitment and was unable to appear. She instead participated in an event at The Jacksonville Landing in connection to the local commemoration of “National Victims’ Rights Week”.

However, while the timing of the events partially overlapped, they both occurred in downtown Jacksonville only about four blocks away from each other.

Daniels defended her actions on Tuesday.

“I wouldn’t want to go to a debate late like that,” she said. “That was a commitment that I had and I didn’t know how long it was going to be. Folks can make out whatever they want to.”

She again pointed out that she will be appearing on WJXT – 4 for a televised debate on Thursday.
