A South Florida man arrested for killing a Florida State University law professor is now being held in a Tallahassee jail.

Sigfredo Garcia from Miami Beach was arrested last week in Broward County in connection to the death of Daniel Markel. Garcia on Wednesday was handed over to Leon County authorities. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday morning.

Markel was shot in the head inside his Tallahassee garage during the middle of the day in July 2014. Markel, who was well-known in national and international legal circles, died later from the wound.

Fort Lauderdale attorney Jim Lewis said this week that Garcia had nothing to do with Markel’s killing and will plead not guilty to the charges.

The circumstances surrounding Garcia’s arrest have remained vague because a judge has sealed records related to Garcia’s arrest.
