Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam is lending a hand to state Sen. Bill Galvano in the race for newly redrawn Senate District 21, which now covers Brandon, Sun City Center and Wimauma.

Legislative IQ powered by LobbyTools reports that Putnam, a former congressman who represented parts of southern Hillsborough County for nearly a decade, will be one of the hosts at a barbecue meet-and-greet for Galvano starting 6 p.m. Tuesday night at Harvest Fresh Organics, 2324 W. Lake Dr. in Wimauma.

“I do know he is very popular in my new district,” Galvano told the Tampa Bay Times.

Also featured at the event, which will be catered by Alday’s BBQ, will be state Rep. Jake Raburn.

Galvano and Putnam had worked together to address citrus greening, which has been plaguing citrus groves both in the district and throughout Florida.

LobbyTools writes that the new SD 21 is predominantly Republican, with 46.8 percent of those who turned out to vote in the 2012 general election identifying with the GOP. Another 31.6 percent identified with the Democratic Party, and 21.5 percent reported no party affiliation.

Galvano is one of the most likely candidates for Senate president; Putnam is also expected to mount a run for governor in 2018.
