Duval GOP turnout nears 30 percent at 2 PM,; Dems above 21 percent

The narrative established in early voting continues on Election Day in Duval County, with GOP turnout surging near 30 percent at 2:00, and Democratic turnout finally above 21 percent.

This disproportionately larger Republican electorate may be driven, in part, because of the jump in GOP registration after primaries were closed in the contentious races for state attorney and public defender.

A Republican electorate would seem, in theory, to be the most supportive of GOP Mayor Lenny Curry‘s County Referendum 1.

If CR 1 passes, it will compel the city to negotiate new pension plans with public sector employees, closing down the old pension plans (which have $2.8 billion of unfunded liability) in order to dedicate revenue from the extension of a current half-cent sales tax past its current sunset date of 2030.

As of 2:00 p.m., 64,373 of the 215,025 Republicans, or 29.92 percent, had voted.

On the Democratic side, 49,228 of the 230,529 Democrats, or 21.3 percent, had voted.
