Grant Hill to help register Jacksonville Democrats

Grant Hill

Former National Basketball Association star Grant Hill had nineteen seasons in the league, and dished out plenty of assists in his time.

On Monday, he’ll be providing an assist to the Hillary Clinton campaign, via helping with a voter registration drive at 11:30 a.m. at Edward Waters College.

“Ahead of Monday night’s debate, Grant Hill will discuss Hillary Clinton’s plan for an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top and her commitment to providing a good education for all of our children, regardless of zip-code. In contrast, Donald Trump is only in it for himself, and he’s pushing for policies that will help billionaires like himself,” claims a release from the Clinton campaign.

Hill is well-positioned to talk about wealth: reportedly, his net worth is at $180 million. It is unknown at press time if Hill’s remarks will address any meaningful differences between having a mere $180 million and being a billionaire.

As is known by most college basketball fans in the late 1990s, the Hill family has a meaningful connection to Mrs. Clinton.

Hill’s mother was Mrs. Clinton’s college roommate at Wellesley College.

“It’s been interesting, for the last 20 some odd years, with my parents’ connection to the White House,” Hill told the Sporting News in February.

In that interview this year, Hill addressed the presidential race in vague terms that gave no hint of his future campaign surrogacy.

“Right now I think (the presidential race) has consumed America,” Hill said. “It’s that time of year. I think it sort of intensifies as we go through the summer and we approach November. I’m definitely following it. We’ll see how it all goes along,” Hill said.

Ironically enough, there is another voter registration drive with a former NBA player late this week in Jacksonville.

UNF Pride holds a Thursday event with former NBA player Jason Collins.

Collins retired in 2014; he is best known for being the first athlete in major American team sports to come out as gay in 2012.

Upon his retirement, Collins had this to say about gay players in major sports.

“There are still no publicly gay players in the NFL, NHL or major league baseball. Believe me: They exist. Every pro sport has them. I know some of them personally. When we get to the point where a gay pro athlete is no longer forced to live in fear that he’ll be shunned by teammates or outed by tabloids, when we get to the point where he plays while his significant other waits in the family room, when we get to the point where he’s not compelled to hide his true self and is able to live an authentic life, then coming out won’t be such a big deal. But we’re not there yet,” Collins said.
