On Thursday morning, Jacksonville City Councilman Scott Wilson continued to recruit pledges for his bid for the council vice-presidency.
Wilson discussed his bid with former Council President Greg Anderson, who refused to commit given that he hadn’t talked to the other candidate in the race yet.
That said, the meeting essentially was in the “mutual admiration society” vein.
Wilson lauded Anderson’s presidency, putting it in the tradition of Kevin Hyde, before pointing out that Anderson had selected Wilson as committee chairperson of the year at the end of his term.
Anderson lauded the “very unique perspective” Wilson brings to the council.
Wilson served as a council assistant for eight years to former Councilman Don Redman.
As was the case when Anderson pledged his support for current VP John Crescimbeni for the top job, he noted that pension reform looked likely to be the major issue facing the council in the near future.
Both men agreed that the mayor’s office needed to debrief council members on recent pension history and what the new deal, which still needs to be approved by the fire union, does.
Wilson’s opponent, Aaron Bowman, will attempt to secure his first pledge of support later on Thursday, in a 1:30 meeting with fellow Republican Jim Love, a co-sponsor of the recent expansion bill of the city’s Human Rights Ordinance.
Currently, Crescimbeni has a 6 to 1 lead in signed pledges over Anna Brosche in the race for the presidency; Wilson leads Bowman 3 to 1 in the VP derby.
