The world was shocked last week when a gunman took an Uber to his former high school in Parkland, Florida, and shot dozens of former classmates.
Seventeen perished. Many more were wounded. And everyone in the school that day lived through an unimaginable terror.
And, across the country and the world, people are doing what they can to help.
A fundraiser Thursday evening in downtown Jacksonville will go to support the victims and families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. All proceeds will go to the official GoFundMe page sponsored by the Broward Education Fund.
The event will be held at Superfood and Brew from 5 to 10 p.m., and we talked to one of the co-organizers, MSD alum Haleigh Hutchison.
Hutchison, a prominent Democrat who currently works as assistant to Jacksonville Councilman Tommy Hazouri, described it as “pretty amazing how a bunch of strangers came together to get this together in a few days, with donations coming in all around the City for flowers, balloons, and banner to send to MSD.”
“It’s a bizarre and surreal feeling that I never expected to have to process. Seeing the protests and survivors speaking out all over the country makes me hopeful that this will truly spark change,” Hutchison added.
