The capital city will host a free, family friendly event Sunday to celebrate Earth Day.
In fitting fashion, Greening Tallahassee: An Earth Day Celebration will take place at the Thomas P. Smith Water Reclamation Facility. Tours through the facility, water quality lab and nearby Tallahassee Solar Farm will be provided. Typically, the locations aren’t open to the public.
A city news release said the celebration is for citizens who wish to “experience what’s happening locally to preserve and protect our natural resources.”
However, parents with young children might want to skip the tours. For safety reasons, those wishing to take part must be 42 inches tall. Bounce houses and face painting booths will be present near the facilities.
Barring severe weather, the event will begin at noon and end at 4 pm at the Reclamation Facility. Tours begin at 1 pm and transportation to the Solar Farm will be provided.
Greening Tallahassee one of a handful of events and initiatives Tallahassee has planned for in honor of Earth Day, which has been a holiday since 1970.
On Saturday the city will hold a special trash collection event, “Cash for Trash,” where residents with electronic waste, paint, batteries or junk too big for garbage trucks can drop their unwieldy refuse off at the Solid Waste Services facility, 2727 Municipal Way, and get a $5 credit on their utility bill.
Also on the docket is the “In-Home Edition of Longest Table,” which promotes sustainable meals and farm-to-table cuisine. The event will include over 100 dinners, each including six to eight guests, at homes, restaurants and public spaces throughout the community beginning at 6 pm.
