Democrats holding ‘day of action’ ahead of HD 114 special election

Javier Fernandez

Javier Fernandez will be joined by high-ranking Democrats this weekend for a “day of action” ahead of the Tuesday special election in House District 114.

The Saturday event will be held at Coral Pine Park in Pinecrest, 6955 SW 104th St. The invite lists two shifts for would-be volunteers – the first runs from 2 pm to 5 pm and the second from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo and House Democratic Leader Designate Kionne McGhee will be on hand with Fernandez.

Several groups are combining forces to put on the event, billed as focusing on “protecting our unions.” Making the list alongside various Democratic clubs are public employee union AFSCME, United Teachers of Dade, South Florida AFL-CIO, the Miami Association of Firefighters and the Dade County Police Benevolent Association.

More information is available on the event’s Facebook page. Volunteers can also RSVP by sending a note to [email protected]. A virtual phone bank has also been setup for those who cannot attend in person.

Fernandez is running against Republican Andrew Vargas to replace former Democratic Rep. Dasiy Baez, who resigned last year after pleading guilty to perjury in case related to her residency in the Miami-Dade district.

Unaffiliated candidate Liz de las Cuevas will also be on the ballot Tuesday.

HD 114 is a swing seat. Prior to Baez, the seat had been held by Republican Erik Fresen since it was redrawn in 2012. Coincidentally, Fresen has also pleaded guilty to a crime that took place while he was in office.

As of March 22, Fernandez had raised $141,524 for his campaign and had $53,766 in the bank, while Vargas’ had raised $337,423, including $60,000 in loans, and $51307 in the bank.

New finance reports covering March 23 through April 26 are due Friday.

The invite is below.
