Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has earned another endorsement in her bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, as the Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its support of her campaign.
The group serves as the political action committee of Planned Parenthood.
“We’re proud to stand with Debbie, who is committed to achieving equal pay for women, ensuring paid maternity leave, and protecting every woman’s right to make her own decisions about her body,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
“For years, Debbie has worked to expand and protect access to health care for working women and women with low incomes in South Florida. Now more than ever, we need to ensure women, especially women of color like Debbie, have a strong voice in our nation’s capital.”
Mucarsel-Powell, a former associate dean at the FIU Medical School, is one of two Democrats running for Curbelo’s seat in Florida’s 26th Congressional District. CD 26 covers portions of Miami-Dade County.
“I truly appreciate the support of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, a group that has long been dedicated to elevating women’s voices and protecting the right to access safe and affordable health care,” said Mucarsel-Powell in response to the endorsement.
“As someone who shares the values of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, I will make sure our voices will be heard in Washington once I’m elected in November.”
Mucarsel-Powell is competing with former naval officer Demetries Grimes for the Democratic nomination in CD 26. The primary is Aug. 28.
