The Andrew Gillum campaign for Governor reached a milestone Friday, when a $250,000 contribution to Forward Florida pushed the total investment of the George Soros family to a million dollars.
This is the third quarter-million contribution made by Soros to the committee; he has given $950,000 total since the beginning of the campaign cycle, with Alex Soros donating an additional $50,000.
Earlier in July, Gillum discussed his relationship with Soros as being one of long standing with no strings attached.
“I have known Mr. Soros for about fifteen years,” Gillum said, “and he has contributed to work I’ve supported at the People for the American Way Foundation and the youth leadership work I’ve done around the country. He has never called up and asked me for a single thing.”
Soros, as we’ve reported previously, isn’t the only left-wing billionaire engaged: Earlier this summer, Tom Steyer committed $1 million to the Gillum effort via NextGen America, Steyer’s progressive super PAC.
And Steyer’s is not the only Super PAC involved: the Collective is putting $500,000 into an ad buy this week targeting Gwen Graham, pushing its spend over $1.75 million.
“Other groups are now pitching in,” Gillum told us last week. “Every day I read clips and there’s another effort that’s underway to help us.”
When asked, Gillum was confident that lack of message control won’t be an issue.
“I try to be my own best messenger,” Gillum said, “and hope that they can pick up from kind of where I leave off, and frankly create ads and advertisements that use my voice and get my voice out there.”
“Obviously we don’t get to control what everyone else does. I’m learning more and more about what everybody’s doing as I read the news,” Gillum added.
