Decisions about 2019 loom for Anna Brosche, Garrett Dennis

Brosche Dennis

Jacksonville City Councilors Anna Brosche (Republican) and Garrett Dennis (Democrat) have some things in common.

They bookend the Council dais, for one. They’ve been muscled out of meaningful committee posts by Council President Aaron Bowman, for another. And they long since have fallen out of favor with the Mayor’s Office.

And both have been rumored to be Lenny Curry‘s main opponents.

On Tuesday afternoon, neither had filed: for Mayor, for re-election, or for anything else.

If Dennis were to file for re-election, he currently has one opponent, who has yet to qualify. If Brosche were to file for re-election, she would face a varied field.

We asked each what the holdup was.

Brosche has three days of absence slated from Council after Tuesday evening’s meeting for Leadership Florida obligations. Those seemingly would preclude her filing in person.

“We’ll know this week,” Brosche said when asked of her future plans.

Indeed, we will: qualifying deadline is Friday by noon.

Dennis likewise is running out some more clock before his decision.

“All options are still on the table. Mayor, [Supervisor of Elections], as well as District 9,” Dennis said.

If he runs citywide, he notes that “potential candidates … are ready to step in.”

And donors?

“Most donors privately just want Lenny gone,” Dennis said.

Curry, as of this writing, has $3 million banked.

Council President Bowman, meanwhile, is unconvinced either will run against Curry.

“I’d be very surprised. There’s no path forward,” Bowman said.

“Unless you’re into self abuse, I don’t know why you would do it,” he added regarding a challenge to Curry.

The Brosche and/or Dennis decision to shorten the campaign season is seen as strategic by others on the Council, who wonder if Curry’s operation even has enough time to spend the cash on hand.

One suspects they would find a way.

I have heard through the grapevine that Brosche has the backing of Socialist George Soros. When I find the documents to prove this, I will take it to the city council and the voters of Jacksonville.
