Democratic state Sen. Gary Farmer of Fort Lauderdale is calling for recognition of the Florida State University school’s 2018 national championship in women’s soccer.
Farmer, an FSU alum, submitted SR 1838 Thursday to congratulate the team, which defeated North Carolina on Dec. 2 to win the NCAA championship. It was the team’s second national championship in five years.
The Seminoles finished 20-4-3, getting hot at the right time, winning the last eight matches through the ACC and NCAA tournaments (defeating North Carolina for the ACC championship as well.)
Farmer’s resolution says: “The Florida State University soccer team is congratulated for winning the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Championship.”
The declaration also pays tribute to Head Coach Mark Krikorian, who won the NCAA national coach of the year award, and several players who also won individual national honors through the season.
Also included are Yujie Zhao, who was named NCAA freshman of the year; and Brooke Bollinger, Deyna Castellanos, Jaelin Howell, Natalia Kuikka, Dallas Dorosy, and Gabby Carle, who won various national honors for the season and the NCAA tournament.
