Stone had a full political life.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is directing flags flown at half staff for the late state Sen. Richard Stone “as a symbol of respect for (his) memory and his service to Florida.”

Stone, of Miami, died Sunday.

“I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse in Miami, the City Hall of Miami and at the Capitol in Tallahassee, effective immediately until sunset on Wednesday, July 31,” DeSantis said in a memo to Tom Berger, the state’s Director of Real Estate Management and Development; Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.

Stone was “elected to serve as a state senator 1967-70,” a statement from DeSantis’ office said.

“In 1970, Stone won the election to serve as Florida’s Secretary of State until 1974. From 1975-80, Stone was Florida’s first Jewish U.S. Senator since the Civil War.

“After serving as a U.S. Senator, Stone was appointed to serve as the Ambassador to Denmark by President George H.W. Bush.”
