Ron DeSantis calls for cease-fire in Ukraine

The Florida Governor invoked the grisly specter of Verdun in a Nikkei Asia interview.

Florida’s Governor is calling for a cease-fire in Russia’s war with Ukraine.

In comments made to Nikkei AsiaRon DeSantis called for a cessation of hostilities, lest a situation happen such as the entrenched bloodshed in World War I.

“You don’t want to end up in, like, a Verdun situation, where you just have mass casualties, mass expense, and end up with a stalemate.” he said. “It’s in everybody’s interest to try to get to a place where we can have a cease-fire.”

More than 300,000 people died in Verdun.

DeSantis also suggested the fight was Europe’s fight, not so much America’s concern.

“The Europeans really need to do more. I mean, this is their continent. The U.S. has provided security for them. And yes, Poland — there’s some that are doing stuff, and that should be appreciated. But Germany, they’re not doing anything,” DeSantis said.

The Governor’s comments on Ukraine are the latest likely controversial musings on a war that has seen him take a variety of rhetorical positions, which he has claimed mean the same thing.

In March, DeSantis decried the war as “something that we have to have an open-ended blank check policy for” and “essentially a stalemate,” depleting “our current weapons stockpiles here in the United States.”

DeSantis originally deemed the war a “territorial dispute” and not one of America’s “vital national interests” in a statement provided to Tucker Carlson, in a seeming effort to curry favor with the now-former Fox News host.

He soon enough walked that position back, telling Piers Morgan “it wasn’t that I thought Russia had a right to that, and so if I should have made that more clear, I could have done it.”

“If I could snap my fingers, I’d give it back to Ukraine 100%,” DeSantis said. “But the reality is what is America’s involvement in terms of escalating with more weapons, and certainly ground troops I think would be a mistake. So, that was the point I was trying to make, but Russia was wrong to invade.”

DeSantis’ muddled position has earned him criticism from former Vice President Mike Pence and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, each of whom rejected his “territorial dispute” framing.

Former President Donald Trump knocked the Governor’s “neocon rhetoric” when he tried to walk back the “territorial dispute” language last month.

The sharpest criticism may be from 2024 candidate Nikki Haley, however, who said the Governor was “weak in the knees.”

tell us something we don’t know. We know that DeSantis is not pro democracy or piece..

He can’t even keep peace in Florida let alone trying to dictate to the world how to bring peace.

DeSantis is at war with Floridians, drag, queens,, teachers, the LGBTQ community,, women, and even a mouse.

He is anti-business and rules by an authoritarian fascist ideology.

Now he’s wasting Florida’s taxpayers money to go on vacation with his wife and children to spew more rhetoric

Desantis wants a cease fire for one reason. Putin. A cease fire will let a Russian mobilize additional troops, transfer more arms and supplies. If we look at what Desantis has done individually item by item in Florida nothing is for the residents except for a self serving autocrat. His GOP cronies give me a free hand in everything he demands. From a $100 million voting police force to try I g to cl9se the no. 1 employer. Burning books cleansing history of racism to erasing identity of kids who he calls alien. He has created support of nationists, fascist seniors that dwell in the Villages and anti immigrant white priveledge bigots. Notvmainstream but mags. Donors should be very wary occ a future Hitler.

Russia will not just stop fighting until they are run completely out of Ukraine number one. Number two, if Ukrainians just stopped fighting, the Russians would take advantage of it. Cease fires haven’t worked well in the past, and that will just give Russia time to regroup and most likely they’ll break the ceasefire and take advantage. These GOP hogs just don’t want to help anyone if there isn’t some kind of money profit involved. They don’t care about our allies. They don’t care about Democratic countries being attacked by autocratic countries. Is not that much trouble to support Ukraine with weapons. Thank goodness this guy will not be president.

A cease fire will allow Putin to reorganize his campaign against Ukrain! DeSantis is a failure waiting to happen……Ladapo was a huge mistake for Florida…..we must never allow DeSantis in the White House.

If the GOP had their way and did whatever they wanted to do over the next 40 years, Europe, China, and Russia would have more of an alliance than the USA and Europe. They don’t have much sense. Just too whacked out at the current moment.

“ Florida’s Governor is calling for a cease-fire in Russia’s war with Ukraine.”- Who cares; nobody’s really paying attention to the nonsense that comes out of his mouth regarding foreign affairs as he knows nothing about them yet offers his unsolicited opinion about them and everything else under the sun. Next thing you know he’ll want to make it illegal to cook a burger any way other than the way he likes them cooked.

He demonstrates a gross lack of knowledge regarding European Contributions to Ukraine, especially those of Germany… Calling for a “Cease Fire” shows that he has no grasp of the military situation, either…

De Santis knows absolutely nothing about diplomacy, much less the workings of the reality governing this region. He cannot even run his own state, leaving many to suffer after recent floods. He is disrespectful and snide when speaking to reporters as well as other officials. Should he try for a presidential run, his ambitions will sorely fail.

Unbelievable. Florida looks like a Middle East war zone and he’s globe trotting for taxpayer-funded press. I hope Netanyahoo endorses trump while Meatball Ron and Biggie Smalls are flying home.

This is a terrible situation because we have an incompetent White House. Had the White House been competent in Afghanistan, then we would never have had an invasion of Ukraine. This is a war that should not exist. The problem is the entire foreign policy of this administration, so you cannot give a small piece of advice for Biden to resolve this conflict. You have to take away any sense of a “win” for Russia and at the same time you have to allow Russia to retreat without much of a “loss”. That is easily achievable for an administration that knows how to be strong, but impossible for this current administration.

Too bad that Trump gave the Taliban control of Afghanistan and released thousands of terrorists when he was in the WH.

I’m glad DeSantis does not have a war mongering military-industrial-complex complex like limp noodle Graham or RINO Ricky Scott.
