Ron DeSantis flexes on Florida Legislature over its redistricting retreat

The Governor discussed a 2022 controversy and how lawmakers bowed to his will.

With days until the 2024 Legislative Session starts, Ron DeSantis is letting the Senate and House know who’s the boss.

It’s the man with the veto pen.

DeSantis told a crowd in Laconia, New Hampshire, about what happened when the Legislative branch passed a congressional redistricting map he didn’t want, explaining how he got legislators to bend to his will in 2022.

“I saw them working on it. I said, ‘wait a minute,’ you know, and part of it involves like things that were unconstitutional, racial gerrymandering stuff,” DeSantis said, referring to a map that protected districts such as North Florida’s 5th Congressional District (historically represented by a Black member of Congress) and others that provided opportunities to minority candidates.

“And I said, look, I’m not going to sign that,” he said, noting that the Legislature “just kind of went through, they did it” despite him saying he was “going to veto that” and “not going to accept that.”

He noted then that the Legislature fell in line, which happened in a Special Session in Spring 2022. DeSantis’ office drew Florida’s congressional map, one approved by the Legislature on April 21, after DeSantis vetoed their previous product.

“All of a sudden, you know, we were able to, we were able to fix that problem and actually we got, the map got upheld in a court of appeals in Florida already. And I think our Supreme Court is going to hear it, but I mean, we’re going to end up winning on that. So I was right on the law as well,” he said.

Indeed, the 1st District Court of Appeals overturned a lower court decision that struck the map.

DeSantis has credited the map he pushed through with creating a Republican majority in the U.S. House.

“We helped elect four additional Republicans to the U.S. Congress and we probably wouldn’t have the majority if that hadn’t happened,” DeSantis said.

Florida now has 20 Republicans in Congress, up from 16 in the previous Congress. The state gained a seat in reapportionment, taking the state from a 15-12 split to a 20-8 GOP advantage.

Despite the Governor engineering a Republican-leaning map that did ultimately secure the congressional majority, more than half of Florida’s Republicans in the House have endorsed Donald Trump.

U.S. Reps. Gus BilirakisVern BuchananByron DonaldsCarlos GiménezMatt GaetzAnna Paulina LunaBrian MastCory MillsJohn RutherfordGreg Steube and Michael Waltz have all endorsed Trump.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Laurel Lee, whom DeSantis appointed to be Secretary of State, is the only Republican in the delegation to back the Governor’s 2024 bid.

DeSantis has the vast majority of Tallahassee Republicans backing him, however, showing that if he hurt their feelings with their map veto, it was only a temporary thing.

If you see either a Subaru SUV or any type of VOLVO vehicle odds are 92.467% the driver is a flameing and annoying leftist and any and all passangers are suspect. If one of the above autos actually pulls up in your driveway pretend nobody’s home. You will thank me later.*

Hey pops, that’s exactly right. DeSantis needs to take your advice. His mid six figure salaried advisors don’t seem to have any advice that’s worth even so much one nickel but you gotta have two nickels to rub together.

  • Day One

    December 30, 2023 at 9:15 pm

Day one of the 2024 session should be laser focused on undoing the big mistake of exempting Ron DeSantis from Resign to Run.

Day 2, given all the questions swirling around Ron’s Never Back Down PAC finances and dealings, remove Ron’s exemption from Florida’s Sunshine laws.

Day 3 – Do away with School Vouchers for Private schools for the following reasons:
      1) Private schools are not accountable to the state. There’s no accreditation and they create their curriculum.
      Which is why –
      2) Private schools are not required to administer state standardized tests. Private school students are exempt from taking the B.E.S.T., F.A.S.T., etc.
      3) Background checks are not required for staff, only the owner/operator must submit for a background check.

Need I go on? Our tax dollars are paying for this sham of an education. I pause to wonder what parents are told that their children will receive an inferior education. Mmmm, then I remember that the majority of recipients of the Private school vouchers are those children from low-income homes. Outrageous!
As a side note, there is a proliferation of new, previously unheard-of private schools eagerly taking the school vouchers as their tuition is pretty much the same. Unabashedly they operate out of strip malls, abandoned buildings, low-budget hotel rooms…

Dee is self-congratulatory here (again), but as in 2010 the ultimate goal is to keep the courts from reversing the gerrymander until after the 2024 elections. This gives the vandals two more years to trash what they don’t like, people or laws.

Actually, this is an example of executive overreach which is the #1 issue in DC. The legislature giving up their responsibilities is not good governance.

The difference is supermajorities in the legislature in Fla. or Tex., which is not true in DC.

Oh for God’s sakes STOP THE INSANITY! Ron, you are a great Governor. You have a beautiful intelligent wife and wonderful children. You’ve done a GREAT job as Governor. Be proud of this! You still have a shot at President in the years to come. But for God’s sakes stop running for President now. SUPPORT TRUMP. Yes, Trump is an anomoly. He’s strange. He’s weird. He’s not what we typically think of a winning candidate, yet he’s winning. Look Ron, if you believe the bible then believe this. GOD uses who HE wants to use to confuse those who think they are in control. TRUMP is this person. It doesn’t matter if Trump is perfect. God is perfect and if God uses Trump that is to teach us all a lesson in humility and to push forward a better plan than having a President like Biden who doesn’t know where he is half the time and has a coke head sex trafficking son like Hunter. In a perfect world we wouldn’t have this debacle but the LEFT KNOWs they stole the election from Trump and too many people KNOW IT so they must give HIM BACK THE OFFICE THEY STOLE before. It’s how the game works and it must be like this or the Dems will crumble. They know they must give Trump back what they stole or everything they’ve worked for for years will be for nothing. The jig is up. Time to pay. Trump must win in 2024
