Gov. DeSantis signs legislation to crackdown on China, forced labor, wind turbines

'We’re restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots.'

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed three measures that will push the state to divest from Chinese companies, bar contracts with companies engaging forced labor and overhaul the state’s energy policies.

“The legislation I signed today — HB 1645, HB 7071 and HB 1331 — will keep windmills off our beaches, gas in our tanks, and China out of our state,” DeSantis posted on X. “We’re restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots. Furthermore, we’re going to ensure foreign adversaries like China have no foothold in our state.”

The most contested bill in the trio was HB 1645, which includes a ban on windmills, both within the state and offshore and removes an incentive for state and local governments to purchase electric vehicles by eliminating a requirement that the most fuel-efficient vehicles be selected.

Those provisions garnered opposition from environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, which wrote to DeSantis in March urging a veto.

“Governor, this administration and legislature have consistently failed to address climate change,” says the letter from James Scott, Executive Committee Chair of Sierra Club Florida.

“Instead of expanding investments in clean, renewable energy and directly creating jobs and savings for ratepayers, homeowners, and the public, this bill does the opposite. It strips local communities of the freedom to make their own choices, and forces an expensive and dirty fuel into our homes.”

The bill passed along party lines, with Democrats opposed, 28-12 in the Senate and 81-29 in the House.

The two other bills, though, passed unanimously.

Under HB 7071, the State Board of Administration is directed to start an inquiry of state investments in companies which are majority owned by the Chinese government, the Chinese Communist Party and affiliated companies by June 1. The SBA is also directed to develop a plan by Sept. 1 for selling off the state’s interest in those companies, with completion expected by Sept. 1, 2025.

And under HB 1331, state and local governments are prohibited from contracting with a company found to have used forced labor to produce goods.

A 21-year-old Florida man has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for firebombing a reproductive health clinic, prosecutors confirmed, with a judge saying he has “no empathy for women and their rights”.

Xavier Batten pleaded guilty in January to one count of possessing an unregistered destructive device and one count of intentionally damaging a reproductive health services facility.

US District Judge Cormac J Carney also sentenced Batten, of Brooksville, Florida, to three years of probation and ordered him to pay 1,000 dollars in restitution, the US Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

The judge said Batten had committed a “cowardly crime” that showed “no empathy for women and their rights,” according to the statement.

Hey Pops last night I was watching this comedy/news show (with some dork named Oliver but he’s pretty funny) where they disclosed how many polices in the USA have OD’ed on fentanyl due to incidental exposure on the job as the popo. It’s zero. And that’s OD’ed, not even died. “Died” is also zero.

Do you think “they” are lying to us about the immediate dangers of fentanyl? It’s definitely addictive AF and can be fatal much “sooner” rather than “later (like heroin),” but all the media hoopla about dying from accidentally touching fentanyl or accident inhaling some unexpectedly, is that all a bunch of nonsense?

Is it a bunch of malarkey? Just like it was with every previous drug where the same claims used to be made? False media? We don’t need that do we Harry.

A rap burglar, false media. We don’t need it do we? It’s fake that’s what it be to ‘ya, dig me? Don’t believe the hype!

DSF i remember back in 1967 when i started smoking pot. the government put out propaganda saying that repeated use of pot would cause men to grow breasts. are you old enough to remember that? well after 57 years of heavy constant pot use, my chest is still firm and flat. do you think the government lied to us?

Rhonda wishes to be in charge of other states. He spent an entire year pretending to be Governor of Iowa (but at the expense of Floridians) but that plan failed epically.

Now Rhonda plays like he is Governor of Texas, perhaps thinking that is an easier pick for him stealing a job from the guy in the wheelchair? What is wheelchair guy going to do? Rhonda has HIGH HEELS!

Given how they governs Florida, I think Rhonda doesn’t just want to be in some other state, any other state, I believe Rhonda hates Florida because Rhonda hates themself.

Ehhhhh, whatever keeps the little guy busy, I reckon. Good for him. Self immolation might fix it!

Only one of the three (3) bills passed the Florida Legislature on a party-line vote. The other two (2) bills enjoyed unanimous bipartisan support from Republican and Democratic state lawmakers. Leadership matters.

CAROL, you are right, leadeship matters. desantis, is not a good leader. so something happened in his state that was bi-partisan, how in the world did he let that happen. i know you must think he’s cute or something weird, because you aren’t describing the desantis i know.

What is Rhonda’s problem with wind turbines? They are white and are historically from Holland, an extremely white nation even if they’re not all that nationalist (in Hollland, anyways, but in these USA parts, their saying goes “If you ain’t Dutch, you ain’t much” which does come across as just a widdle white nationalist).

Did the Oil Men tell Rhonda “No wind turbines”?

    I bet they did!

DeSantis ignorance and stupidity is legendary. Florida and the oceans that surround it are heating so fast that all marine life will be washed up on Florida’s shores within 5 years. Within 7 years, Florida will be completely uninhabitable for humans.

DeSantis can take the words climate change out of Florida law, but he can’t take the climate change out of Florida, as he will soon learn firsthand.
