Gov. DeSantis says sales tax relief should help Floridians, not foreigners
Florida lawmakers propose a surprising $5B sales tax cut, raising questions about balancing relief with essential services funding.

The old saying “it ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at” doesn’t apply to sales taxes in Gov. Ron DeSantis’ reckoning.

“I would support sales tax relief for Floridians. I don’t want to see us give relief to Canadians. I want them paying the tax, right?” DeSantis said.

During those remarks, DeSantis was again addressing the ongoing dispute over his desire to end property taxes, which House Speaker Daniel Perez countered with a proposal to cut sales tax by 3/4 of a penny.

“I don’t know why you would want to relieve the burden on, you know, Brazilians who come to Disney and spend all this money,” DeSantis added. “I want the government funded by our nonresidents as much as possible. I want to relieve burdens on Floridians and give the burdens to them.”

DeSantis has said before that tourists can fill the gap created by eliminating property taxes, with hotel taxes being mechanisms to handle that shortfall, along with cuts in local governments via his Florida DOGE initiative.

Meanwhile, Senate President Ben Albritton is seeking a permanent sales tax exemption on some consumer items, including clothing priced at under $75.

DeSantis indicated conceptual support for that approach Thursday.

“If you’re going to do sales tax, I think I agree with the President of the Senate. If you’re going to do sales tax, target it to things that are going to benefit Floridians,” he said.

The Governor made the comments at the City of Sweetwater Community Center.

So, those Brazilians, especially, I mean, you know how they are.. trying to beat poor little Florida out of sales tax. Hey, we already tax them for every thing we can during their visit, from the car rental fees, hotel taxes, Disney tickets etc. why not get them for that 3/4 of a penny, too!

Don’t worry. Foreign visitors are no longer welcome in the United States of Deportation.

Nowadays, anyone can be detained indefinitely at the border and/or sent back to wherever without due process, regardless of legal, visitor, or visa status. Many of our former friends and allies no longer feel welcome here, and foreign governments have issued travel advisories to their citizens.

So in DeSantis’s magical thinking world every shopper in Florida will need to show their birth certificate or passport!

What DeSantis doesn’t quite understand is that once Trump’s tariff’s kick in Americans will be going to Canada to shop!
